Installation and commissioning of radio networks and DAS systems.

We install and commission the radio system: antennas, site equipment, simulcast repeaters, microwave links, connectors, and the passive components of the DAS. Civil works and radiating cable laying are handled by partner companies. We finish every job with acceptance testing: RF measurements, coverage and call tests, test reports, and as-built documentation.

The service

A well-designed radio system only reaches its design performance if it is installed to a professional standard. A badly terminated connector on the radiating cable raises the VSWR and wastes power along the whole run. A cable pulled around too tight a bend adds attenuation and fails over time. An antenna a few degrees off boresight leaves exactly the stretch the design was meant to serve without coverage. An incomplete grounding connection exposes the equipment to the first lightning strike. These are defects created on site and discovered in service.

That is why our own technicians follow the works from start to finish and close them with instrumented acceptance testing. Our scope is the radio side: mounting antennas and equipment, pulling cables through the existing infrastructure, connectors and passive components, power and grounding, configuration and measurements. Civil works and the laying of radiating cable and fiber are handled by partner companies. All work follows the procedures of our ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system, and every measurement is taken with calibrated instruments.

The phases

How the work is organized.

The three phases of every job, each with its own technicians, its own instruments, and its own documents.

  • Installation

    We install the antennas and the site equipment, mount the racks in equipment rooms and shelters, pull the cables through the existing infrastructure, and carry out connector termination, RF cabling, power, and grounding. Our technicians work within the operating windows agreed with the infrastructure operator.

  • Commissioning

    We configure the equipment, program the channels and the terminals, align the simulcast (same-frequency) sites, and connect the system to the control room and to the customer’s monitoring systems.

  • Acceptance testing

    We take the acceptance measurements on lines and antennas with calibrated instruments, run the coverage tests, compare every value against the design specification, and record the results in the signed acceptance report.

  • Cable routes and supports

    • Cable pulling through existing risers, trays, and ducts
    • Routes and termination points checked before installation
    • Brackets and mounts for antennas and equipment on the existing structures

    • Sealing and mechanical protection of the termination points inside the tunnel
  • Radio sites, antennas, and equipment

    • Racks, base stations, and repeaters mounted in equipment rooms and shelters
    • Site antennas installed, with azimuth and tilt checked against the design
    • Duplexers, combiners, filters, and feeder cables fitted
    • Backbone microwave links installed and aligned
    • Equipment, cables, and connectors labeled according to the design drawings
  • Power, backup supply, and grounding

    • Distribution boards, protection devices, and dedicated feeds for the radio equipment
    • Power supplies, UPS units, and backup batteries sized for the required autonomy
    • Equipment, racks, and antenna supports bonded to the grounding system
    • Surge arresters on the RF lines and on the power lines
    • System operation tested with the mains supply removed
  • Cabling, network, and monitoring

    • Termination of the fiber-optic backbones and of the copper links between the sites, the equipment rooms, and the control room
    • Network equipment, PoE power supplies, and patch cabinets installed
    • Our monitoring systems fitted: TP-CCV2 in the base station cabinet, TP-RFX and TP-CELLX inside the tunnel
    • Fiber links measured and network ports tested before commissioning
    • Alarms from every unit verified as reaching the control room and Track-TP
  • Configuration and commissioning

    • Channels, talkgroups, and user profiles programmed
    • Alignment and synchronization of the simulcast (same-frequency) sites
    • Dispatch consoles, voice recorder, and radio gateways configured
    • Portable and mobile terminals programmed before handover to the customer
    • Firmware on all equipment aligned to the handover release
  • RF acceptance measurements

    • VSWR on antennas, feeder cables, and radiating cable runs
    • Line fault location by distance-to-fault analysis
    • Attenuation and signal levels along the route, compared with the design calculation
    • Output power, frequency deviation, and receive sensitivity of every unit
    • Continuity and insulation test on the radiating cable before commissioning
  • Coverage tests and functional acceptance

    • Drive test along the whole route, logging signal level and position
    • Coverage tests in every bore, in the niches, and in the cross-passages between bores
    • Call tests between the control room, vehicles, and portable terminals on every channel in service
    • Continuity of communication verified when moving from one simulcast site to the next
    • Emergency call tests and the procedures agreed with the control room

How a job runs.

The cycle we follow on every system, from the first site survey to handover into service.

  1. Step 01

    Site planning and permits

    We run the site survey with the infrastructure operator, handle the permit applications and the frequency license, then agree the safety plan, the schedule, and the operating windows that let us work without shutting down service.

  2. Step 02

    Preparation at our premises

    We assemble the racks at our premises, configure the equipment on the bench, and verify that it works before shipping: what reaches the site has already been tested.

  3. Step 03

    Field installation

    Our technicians install the antennas and the equipment in the equipment rooms and shelters, pull the cables through the existing infrastructure, and complete connector termination, RF cabling, power, and grounding.

  4. Step 04

    Commissioning

    We configure the equipment, align the simulcast sites, program the terminals, and connect the system to the control room and to the monitoring systems.

  5. Step 05

    Acceptance testing and handover

    We take the acceptance measurements and run the coverage tests together with the customer’s staff, sign the acceptance report, and hand over the as-built documentation. During the first weeks in service we work alongside the operators.

Deliverables

What you receive at handover.

The documents and files the customer keeps, useful for operations, for maintenance, and in audits and tenders.

  • Acceptance test report

    Collects the acceptance measurements taken site by site and section by section, compared with the design specification, and signed by the technicians who took them.

  • Coverage test report

    The results of the drive tests and of the in-tunnel tests, with the signal levels logged along the route and the outcome of the call tests on every service.

  • As-built documentation

    Layout drawings, wiring diagrams, and RF diagrams updated to the system as actually installed, with the cable routes and the position of every unit.

  • Register of installed equipment

    A list of equipment, antennas, and accessories with serial number, position, and firmware version, useful for spare parts management and for the maintenance contract.

  • Copy of the configurations

    The programming files for the equipment, the terminals, and the dispatch consoles, handed to the customer together with the management credentials.

  • Permits and conformity documents

    Authorizations, the frequency license, declarations of conformity for the installed materials, and the equipment user manuals.

Can a radio system be installed without shutting down the infrastructure?

In most cases, yes. Our technicians work within the operating windows agreed with the operator, which usually fall at night or during low-traffic hours, and at the end of every shift the work area is cleared and the road handed back. Some tunnel work, such as laying radiating cable along the sidewall, still requires closing a lane or a tunnel bore: the site works plan, which we draw up after the site survey with the operator, states which operations require it and for how long.

How long does it take to install a radio network?

The schedule depends on the number of sites, on the supporting works required, and above all on the hours the operator grants per shift, rather than on how much equipment there is to install: on infrastructure that stays in service our technicians work only a few hours at a time, so the job stretches out even when the work itself is simple. Racks are assembled and equipment configured in parallel at our premises, so only mounting, cabling, and testing are left for the field. We set the schedule site by site after the site survey and update it whenever the available windows change.

What happens if an acceptance measurement falls outside the design specification?

The out-of-specification reading goes into the acceptance report and the acceptance testing does not close. We look for the cause in the field: in most cases it is a badly terminated connector, a length of cable damaged during laying, or an antenna out of alignment. Once the defect is corrected, we repeat the measurement at the same point with the same instrument. The system is handed over when every value is back within specification, and the acceptance report keeps both the original reading and the one taken after the fix.

What does the customer need to provide before work starts on site?

Three things: access to the sites and tunnels with the authorizations of the infrastructure operator, equipment rooms or shelters ready to receive the equipment with mains power already available, and a technical contact who can make decisions when something unexpected comes up on site. It also helps to receive the documentation of the existing system in advance, with the cable routes and the wiring diagrams, because on infrastructure that stays in service every drilling point and every cable run has to be agreed beforehand. Everything else, from materials to test instruments, we bring ourselves.
