The challenges

The three challenges of coordinating a fleet.

What a transport company or a logistics hub has to deliver every day, across the control room, the vehicles, and the yard crews.

  • Communication across wide areas

    The control room, moving vehicles, and yard crews all have to stay connected across yards, warehouses, and along the routes. Where radio coverage does not reach, you need a network to extend it and a Push-to-Talk over cellular (PoC) solution that keeps everyone on the same channel.

  • Knowing where the vehicles are

    The control room needs to know the position of every vehicle and field unit at all times to set priorities and handle the unexpected. Without real-time tracking, coordination relies on phone calls and guesswork.

  • Coordinating different teams

    Handling, security, and maintenance work in the same logistics hub with different needs. You need dedicated groups and priorities on the same network, plus recording of every communication to reconstruct how an operation was handled.

Control room
The Respondr console brings the radio networks, telephony, and vehicle positions together at a single operator position.
Site radio network
The base stations in the technical room and the yard antennas serve the crews working inside the logistics hub.
Push-to-Talk over cellular
The Respondr app carries the same talkgroups to the drivers’ terminals, over Wi-Fi, LTE, and 5G.
Yard coverage
The site antennas cover the yard and the loading bays. Inside the warehouse, coverage continues with the DAS.

  • Inside the site

    In the yard and inside the warehouses, the crews communicate on the company radio network: DMR Tier II and Tier III systems, TETRA trunking, or VHF/UHF links, with a DAS in the areas the outside signal does not reach.

  • Away from the site

    Drivers and staff on the road stay on the same talkgroups with Push-to-Talk over the cellular network: the Respondr app carries the voice over Wi-Fi, LTE, and 5G.

  • In the control room

    The operator works from a single console: seeing the vehicles on the map, setting call priorities, and switching from radio to telephone without changing position. The built-in recorder stores every communication.

The systems

What a system for a logistics hub includes.

The systems we build in the yard, in the warehouses, and in the control room, and what each one covers, from the site radio network to supervision of the equipment.

  • Yard radio network

    • Base stations and repeaters installed in the site’s technical room
    • Yard antennas mounted with the azimuth and tilt set by the design

  1. On-site teams stay in touch

    Yard staff, handling, and maintenance talk to each other over the company radio network. We design and build these networks (DMR Tier II and Tier III, TETRA trunking, VHF/UHF links) and we supply, program, and maintain the terminals: we are authorized Motorola Solutions, Hytera, and Kenwood resellers and the exclusive Funktronic distributor for Italy.

  2. Distant vehicles join over PoC

    Moving vehicles and units outside radio coverage stay on the same channels through Push-to-Talk over cellular (PoC): the Respondr app carries voice over Wi-Fi, LTE, and 5G, and a gateway links the radio fleet to the cellular network. We can supply multi-operator SIMs for the PoC terminals.

  3. The control room coordinates and sees where the vehicles are

    The operator works on the Respondr dispatch console, which brings radio networks, telephony, and the real-time GPS position of vehicles and units together on a single map. From one workstation the operator sets priorities, handles the unexpected, and keeps every team connected.

  4. The network stays under control

    The Track-TP platform shows the status of network equipment, radio networks, and, where present, the LoRaWAN sensors at the logistics hubs on a single dashboard, with real-time alarms: a fault is caught before it becomes a service outage.

Frequently asked questions.

The questions we are asked most often about this type of system.

How many radio terminals does a logistics hub need?

The count starts from the people on duty in the same shift, not from total headcount: you need one terminal for every yard and warehouse operator on shift, one for every vehicle carrying an on-board set, and one for every driver who has to stay connected away from the site. To these you add the spare terminals that cover the charging rotation and any failures, together with the multi-unit chargers and spare batteries. The final number is settled with the operations manager, because it depends on how the shifts are organized and on which crews have to talk to each other.

Does vehicle tracking work outside radio network coverage as well?

Yes, as long as the vehicle stays connected to a network. Respondr collects positions from several sources — the Android and iOS app installed on the terminals, LTE radios, and the on-board GPS trackers — and shows them all on the same control room map. Where neither the radio network nor the cellular network reaches, the position is not transmitted and starts updating again as soon as the vehicle is back in coverage.

How long are recordings of communications kept?

The company sets the period: the recorder built into Respondr has configurable retention and creates an automatic backup of the recordings. The duration is chosen based on how far back you need to be able to reconstruct an operation or answer a complaint. Since these are recordings of staff communications, the retention period and the access rules have to be agreed with whoever manages data processing in the company.

What is the difference between Push-to-Talk and a phone call or a messaging group?

Push-to-Talk is immediate one-to-many communication: you press the button and talk to the whole talkgroup, without dialing a number and without anyone having to answer. A phone call connects two people at a time, while in a messaging group you do not know whether the message is being read while the operation is under way. On top of that, Push-to-Talk is governed from the control room: separate groups per crew, priority on calls, and recording of every communication are functions that consumer tools do not provide.

Our systems integrate with the equipment you already have.

No closed systems: we use open protocols, let different technologies coexist on the same infrastructure, and work with the certifications that public tenders require.

Radio, telephony, and cellular on one console

Respondr manages TETRA, DMR, and VHF/UHF radio networks, telephony, and Push-to-Talk over cellular (PoC) from the same console: all fleet communications on a single workstation.

Integration with the customer’s systems

The monitoring and dispatch systems interface with the customer’s third-party platforms via SNMP, relay contacts, and APIs: alarms and data arrive where you already work.
